UCC implemented in Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand has now become the first state after Goa state of India, where Uniform Civil Code has been implemented. After the launch of UCC rules and portal by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uniform Civil Code has now become effective in the state of Uttarakhand. After the implementation of Uniform Civil Code, now a law on religion and castes has come into force. In such a situation, according to the provisions given in the UCC rules, all the processes including marriage registration, divorce registration, will, etc. will be under the UCC law.
Can the rules change when the government changes?
Now the question is whether the UCC law can be withdrawn after the change of government in Uttarakhand. The answer is no. Parliament has the right to repeal or abolish any law in India. If any law is unconstitutional, the judiciary can also abolish that law. The state government cannot withdraw any law, but the Governor approves the law proposals passed by the state assembly.

Let us tell you that an expert committee was constituted on 27 May 2022 under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. After which the committee, based on discussions with various sections of the society in about one and a half years, submitted its detailed report prepared in four volumes to the state government on February 2, 2024. Based on the report, the UCC Bill was passed in the special session of the State Assembly on February 7, 2024 and a month later, on March 12, 2024, the President also gave his assent to it.
What is Uniform Civil Code?
Let us tell you that Uniform Civil Code (UCC) means that there will be only one law for all the citizens living in the country, irrespective of their religion, caste or gender. Let us tell you that if the Civil Code is implemented in any state, then there will be same law for every citizen in all the subjects like marriage, divorce, child adoption and division of property as well as live-in relationships. Along with marriage, it is mandatory for live-in couples to register as well.
